Literacy Tutoring with Ms. Susan
Developing the skills to read and write while fostering a love of literature
Reading is a fundamental human joy, and children are capable of learning to read as early as age 3.
During 1-hour tutoring sessions, Ms. Susan works one-on-one with your child—or, in some cases, groups of 2 children—to learn reading and writing the Montessori way.
The Montessori Approach to Literacy
Ms. Susan follows the Montessori approach to teaching reading and writing, using authentic Montessori materials.
Literacy begins with developing spoken language and building vocabulary. We do this through having conversation, reading books, telling stories, singing songs, and playing vocabulary games.
Developing phonemic awareness comes next. Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize the sounds in words. We develop this skill by playing different sound games with children.
Next, we teach children to associate sounds with letters symbols, using Sandpaper Letters and Sandpaper Phonograms.
When children are fluent with letter sounds, we move on to writing using the Movable Alphabet. Writing at this age is all about joyful self-expression!
Along the way, children practice handwriting using a variety of materials including a Sand Tray, chalkboard & chalk, and pencil & paper.
After laying a strong foundation with phonics, reading comes naturally! Using Montessori materials including the Phonetic Object Box and Three-Part Cards, children begin with simple, phonetic C-V-C (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, then move on to reading with phonograms, and more challenging “sight words,” or “puzzle words.”
Children who are reading fluently can go on to more challenging Grammar and Word Study lessons (think singular & plural, synonyms & antonyms, prefixes & suffixes, etc.)
Parents receive an email following every tutoring session that includes a summary of what we worked on, how to support your child at home, and what we plan to work on next time.

Private tutoring in your home (within a 5 mi radius of Westover Library*): $80/hr.
Private tutoring at/near Westover Library* in North Arlington: $65/hr.
